Nazareth

Founded: 600-900 BCE

Population: 70,000

Location: Nazareth is located between the open space of the Jezreel Valley and the mountainous regions of Galilee. Nazareth is also 60 miles north of Jerusalem and midway between the Mediterranean and Seas.

Interesting Facts: It was in Nazareth, Galilee, that the angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary to announce the birth of Jesus. Nazareth is the home of Mary and Joseph according to the Gospels and the place where Jesus spent most of His life; from childhood to adulthood; and commenced His ministry in the natural starting point for a Holy Land Pilgrimage. At that time, two millennia ago, Nazareth was a mere village.

Nazareth Today: is a focal point for a large segment of the population of the Galilee. Over two- thirds of the population are Muslims, and a third are Christians. Thus, both the minarets of mosques and church spires play along the Nazareth skyline.

Nazareth is a symbol of religious coexistence, since both Muslims and Christians have mutual respect to each other, and live in peace and harmony.

With all the trappings of a modern city, Nazareth has managed to preserve its ancient nucleus- the Old City of Nazareth. The visitor meanders through traditional markets, along the walls of ancient houses and mansions, and among dozens of Churches belonging to numerous different denominations. The Old city is a must for every pilgrim to Israel. It is a place to contemplate the views and landscapes that filled the eyes of the adolescent Jesus, and would remain with Him throughout His ministry on earth.
